“Gorey Gardens” and Poe-try in beautiful San Marino! The Huntington Library’s Ghoulish Gathering on the Greens: a review
The pristine gardens of The Huntington Library and Art Galleries in the upscale community of San Marino California, near Pasadena, is not a place that immediately brings to mind a vision of specters and phantoms. But on one night in October every year, the lawns and terraces of the venerable botanical are transformed into chilling catacombs and darkly decorated halls, straight from the minds and pens of Edgar Allen Poe and Edward Gorey, entitled Drama After Dark: An Evening of Poe and Gorey.
This years’ evening of eerie and “dreary” literary and dramatic spine tinglers was presented on October 9, 2010 by The Guild of St George, an dramatic and historic reenactment group based in San Bernardino, specializing in the Elizabethan and Renaissance periods. This year 10 productions were performed throughout the evening, each one running 15 minutes to a half an hour, and repeated at regular intervals between 7pm and 9pm. The players themselves were costumed in historic dress, apropos to the period of the piece being performed, and delivering what can be awkward and difficult period language with a gusto and understanding that added much to the audience experience. Each vignette was surrounded with blazing candles, in a variety of candelabrum, as well as torches and votives. No electric lighting is permitted. The ambience of the whole event was darkly romantic and, at times, not a little unnerving.
Audience participation is by way of a trek through the moonlit gardens by map (this night in 2010 there was little moon to speak of, heightening the whole dramatic effect) and guests are encouraged to bring their own flashlights to prevent getting as hopelessly lost as my own group did (to our delight) as we were wandering “weak and weary” to the next performance.
Titles performed included Gorey’s Gashleycrumb Tinies and The Green Beads, de rigeur Poe classics The Raven, The Black Cat and The Tell Tale Heart, among many others. Striking performances by actor Jeffrey Paul Whitman as Poe himself in The Raven, and the pretty and fresh faced Heather Dara Williams reciting the bloody masterpiece Masque of the Red Death, were truly memorable. It was impossible to see all the productions in the evening, as they happen simultaneously, guaranteeing a return to the event next year, by dedicated audience members and Guild fans.
Throughout the evening, the audience is almost as entertaining to watch as the performers themselves. During the pre performance, while nibbling on ghastly goodies and sipping mulled cider in the open air foyer, we noted that the spectators ranged in age from wide eyed middle school children all the way up to elegant grandmothers in Prada (due to frightening content and sometimes graphic Victorian violence, no one under 12 is permitted and those under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Also in attendance were literary nerds and professorial types, comparing notes on how well they knew their Poe. And of course there were Steam Punks, EMOs and Gothics, dressed in their black frilled finery, complete with top hats, high lace boots and black lace parasols to guard them from… moonburn? Additionally, I noted at least one Gashleycrumb Tinies lunch pail in the stylish throngs.
All in all The Guild of St George, in collaboration with The Huntington Library, brings to life a dark and delightfully macabre montage in this single evening’s offerings. The boys distract me, bother me and cause all sorts of emotions in me and sometimes I'm not sure that love or hate. Most of the levels of joy and that cause pain are nearly equal. They make you so happy and the next moment they say something that gives you so hard you want to slap in the face. Anyway, the director walks into a bar in She is pathetic place called Loco Lobo. He went straight to the bar and asks the bartender for a bit of honey for his crew. The waiter was in the direction stage and a tempting Fresh has been making his successful wolf. Of course. Was nothing less than Shakira. Christo became Captain Chief Crazy Note Hyper Drive (author HD) and quickly dresses in the range or Boo Boo-Man. Shakira took a look at him and laughed so hard he had to flee the scene.

He disguises himself as The O-Range Blob of Light. Only this time, he throws in a NING. So to get my readers up to speed, it is pronounced The O-Range Blob of Lightnin G. It really can’t be described because it has to be experienced. Alicia Keys is about to become experienced. Her name has been changed to ALIKE because I don’t know her well enough to say ALOVE. So without further adulations, I bring you the conversation between Chief Crazy Captain Christo and Alicia Keys. Those are the two things that would mean the most to me and if ever I needed help would you consider doing these things?”
ALIKE: ” Yes, I will do that! Whew, for a minute there I thought you were going to say something else. Hey Chief Crazy Captain Christo. Why did you take me back to Omaha Nebraska in the 1800′s. That was the most terrifying stagecoach ride I have ever been on. And what does this have to do with The Great Pumpkin?”
O-Range Blob of Lightnin G: ” Well Ms Keys, I am so glad you asked. But this one defies any explanation. How long did it take you to go from being on stage at your concert to where I just took you?’
ALIKE: ” I don’t know maybe a couple of minutes”

Bugs Bunny
There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of Japanese anime to be watched, all across different genres and hence catering to different tastes. Anime is appreciated by all sorts of people from various cultural backgrounds in the world. However, there are a select few that become so popular that they end up being translated into English (either subbed, dubbed or both) and released in English speaking countries.
The one particular anime I wish to discuss in this article is Naruto. If you are relatively new to the anime scene, you may have heard of Naruto but not know much about it. It’s likely that you have already been exposed to anime and don’t realize it. Other long running and classic series include Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT, Pokemon and Bakugan. These other anime series are designed more for younger audience, boys primarily. Naruto on the other hand, I believe, is richer and has a deeper theme allowing it to be appreciated by a wider range of audience whilst still appealing to young boys.
Like pretty much all other anime, Naruto started as a manga. The story concept was conceived by Masashi Kishimoto. He also wrote and illustrated the art in the manga. The Naruto manga was published in 1999, which was then turned into anime and released to the Japanese public in 2002. It proved to be so popular that the series was translated into English and aired in the US (2005), Canada (2005), UK (2006) and Australia (2007). Naruto is still an ongoing series. The original series has completed with 220 episodes. The current second running series is called Naruto Shippuden.
Similar to other anime, the Naruto plot line is structured into arcs of stories where each arc often spans across several episodes. The arcs are separated by “filler” stand-alone episodes which have little or no consequential impact on the overall plot or character development. This approach is different to having purely stand-alone episodes where every episode is unrelated and inconsequential on the next episode. The idea of using arcs definitely has its advantages as you get to see deeper and more meaningful plots. Rather than experiencing short spurts of climax and plot resolutions, you get longer and grander climatic endings.
Basically, the story revolves around a boy with the title name Naruto Uzumaki who dreams of becoming a Hokage in his local village of Konohagakure. In the original series, Naruto is 12 years old. A Hokage is highest level achievable amongst ninja ranks and the individual at this level has the added responsibility of leading the village. The English translation for Konohagakure is Village Hidden in the Leaves and this is the primary geographical location for the stories.
That is basic premise behind Naruto Episode 1. The huge following of this animated series is not just due to the intricate plot lines and deep characters, but also the incredible music. To learn more about it, check out this hub on Naruto Music.
