Bible Stories

One of the neighbouring countries to the land of Israel was Syria. The captain of all the king’s soldiers was Naaman. He was a brave and good man. The king was very fond of him and showed him great honour. All the people of the land admired him.
Naaman’s wife loved him and was very proud of him. One day he came to her with a very sad face. He had discovered that he was a leper. Leprosy was and still is a dreadful disease. It starts with a just a little sore spot but then spreads. It eats away the flesh leaving people disfigured. In bible times the only thing a leper could do was to leave his family and friends and live outside of the community in colonies with other lepers.
Captain Naaman knew that all the honours given to him by his king meant nothing to him if he had to give up his home and the army and become an outcast. His wife was very sad too and longed to be able to help her husband. They knew nothing of the living God and so had no one to whom they could go to in times of trouble.
Living in Naaman’s home was a little girl who had been brought back as a prisoner from one of the raids into Israel. Captain Naaman had taken her to his wife to be a servant girl for her. She knew of the living God and His power. She knew too of the prophet Elisha who was then the great prophet of her people. He had taken Elijah’s place. She knew of the wonderful miracles he had done through God’s power. When her master and mistress were both sad she learned the reason – that Naaman was a leper.
Even though she was far from home and among strangers, she was brave and did her work faithfully. One day she said to her mistress, “If only my master could go to the prophet in Samaria, I am sure that God could heal him of his leprosy.” Perhaps she went on to tell her mistress how Elisha had raised a little boy from the dead. A servant was listening. He hurried away to Naaman to tell him what the little girl had said.
They had never heard of anyone who could cure leprosy. It sounded to good to be true! Naaman got ready at once to go and find the prophet. The king of Syria gave him a letter to the king of Israel. He prepared chariots and horses. Servants went with him for he was a very important man. He took many gifts along, gold and silver and some beautiful robes. His wife and the little maid watched them drive away, hoping that he would come back soon, well and happy.
The long procession of chariots and horseman travelled many days. When they got into the land of Israel, Naaman went at one to the king and presented the letter from his king. The letter simply said, “I am sending Naaman to you so you may heal him of his leprosy.” The king was distraught and thought that the king of Syria was trying to pick a fight. The king of Israel had turned away from the living God to idols.
Word soon reached Elisha and he sent his servant to the king saying, “Send Naaman to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.” When Naaman arrived at Elisha’s house he sent his servant out to him with a message, “Go and wash in the Jordan River seven times, and you will be clean.” Naaman became angry, “Why, I thought he would come out himself and put his hand on my sores and pray to his God. There are better rivers on my land than this muddy Jordan. I’ll not do it.”
But his servants gave wise counsel saying, “If the prophet had told you to do something hard, you would have done it. Even though this is a simple thing try it.” So Naaman took off his outer garments and walked out into the water. Then he dipped down whist the servants watched. When he came up the seventh time, the spots were gone.
The Bible says, “His flesh came again like the flesh of a little child and he was clean.” All his servants could see that he was completely healed. Now Naaman knew that the Elisha’s God was true and living.
