How can I tell what edition antique books are?
Most books will have a publication date somewhere in the front two pages…also on the same page, the publisher’s name. Sometimes also “first edition” may appear there also. Using the author name & book title, Google until you get the history of the book’s publishing…i.e., first published in 1868, reprinted in 1874, etc., etc. so you can verify whether the book you have is from the first printing or a reprinting from later years. A good example is one of the Oz books. “Wizard of Oz” was first published in the early 1900’s, so even a relatively old copy with a later publishing date [1930 or whatever] wouldn’t be all that rare. An original copy from the FIRST printing would be a rare find… Antiquarian booksellers [Google this term too] are a good source for first editions and their relative values.
