philosophy question about the robin hood law of 1993?
In 1993, the Texas state legislature passed the “Robin Hood” law, according to which some funds from property-wealthy school districts are reallocated to poor school districts. The goal of the law was to reduce the great differences in resources between different school districts. With the ideas of Plato/Aristotle, the Utilitarians, Marx, Rawls, and Nozick in mind, reflect for a moment on this law. Is it a just law? Why or why not?
It is surely right to share wealth. But if it is what has to be done, the wealthy shall be right by themselves and sacrifice what they have.
The only sacrifice you are allowed to do is the one of yourself and you cannot blame ignorance and recklessness. If they are doing any wrong, they already suffer their mistake and all you can do is to be disappointed and show them what is right – you cannot act for them.
Therefore, this law is unfair because it forces men to be great while they shall rather act on their own. Stealing their goods won’t make them better men, but will make you worst.
