Horatio Alger

What is the best definition of leadership? I grew up in the 1950-S and 1060 as baby boomers'. As I young, my idea or definition of leadership has been to a combination of models collected from dozens of biographies, including those of political and military leaders, captains of industry robber barons, coaches and athletes.

I read biographies and autobiographies of the real interest of the "titans of industry, with its unbelievable poverty to wealth barons of the 19th and 20th centuries such as Carnegie, DuPont, Edison, Ford, Goodyear, Huntington, Morgan, Stanford, Vanderbilt, and bumps in the mid 20th century as Watson (IBM) and Sloan (General Motors).

I avidly read political biographies of Winston Churchill, Jefferson Davis, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, George Washington and Woodrow Wilson. I also devoured the biographies of military leaders, as the lives of over U. General George S. Patton and Douglas MacArthur.

I, as an Eagle Scout, was especially taken with the biography of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the British general who distinguished himself in the Boer War in South Africa, who declined the honor of being the commander of the British military academy to focus on the foundation and construction of the world Boy Scout. "

I studied the current leaders in the new magazines, books and witnesses as a new type of man appeared in the television business, including the Bass brothers, Henry Ford II, Howard Hughes, Lee Iacocca, J. Willard Marriott, H. Ross Perot and Sam Walton.

I enjoyed watching great actors like Charlton Heston, Gregory Peck, George C. Scott, James Stewart, who brought to life the characters Moses, Michelangelo, Douglas MacArthur, George Patton, and fictional characters "Mr. Smith" or "George Bailey." I watched and admired as successful coaches John Wooden and Vince Lombardi. They were well trained, successful teams, but they were real leaders and builders of young people because they have encouraged their players to be respectable total team spirit and true, and not just the players of individually outstanding basketball or football.

All biographies, magazine articles, plays, and coverage of television Leaders helped shape my style and my mind exactly what the definition of leadership. The stories of successful leaders who overcame adversity has given me an idea of how These setbacks have faced the leaders, the trauma of life, while success despite adversity obstacles or challenges.

Life President John Kennedy and his famous book (1956) provide profiles of courageous leaders. This book and other biographies gave me a real insight into the courage to succeed, whatever adversity and become a strong leader. These stories may have subconsciously influenced my interest in Horatio Alger type stories.

The biographies, my personal experience during 30 years of experience in senior management, and my doctoral studies in leadership, I took my concerns selection about leadership and adversity. My studies have provided refining reading my definition of leadership, and for the life of the leaders who have overcome obstacles and deal with adversity. These early influences formed the basis of my admiration to all the leaders who have succeeded despite the obstacles overcome, tragedy or adversity.

Leadership is more than just a word, is the act of directing. True Enlightenment "Leadership is guiding, leading by example the right, demonstrating the interest sincere and deep to that lead, teamwork, and have a clear vision of the task.

To give an idea of my definition of leadership and impact to overcome adversity, I will finish my personal opinions and the definition of a leader with a brief review of the literature on leadership and the classical definitions.

I will also review the journal literature to overcome adversity as the foundation and basis for consideration of the possible link between overcoming adversity and overcoming obstacles in the design and development of key leaders.

The leadership and how they are identified by the researchers and the world

There a definitive definition of a real or true leadership. Rost (1991) introduced the idea of "the definition of leadership" but noted that there is still no real agreement on what leadership (p. 6).

The cable word as a verb, comes from the old English word or Loeda leden. Some have attributed various meanings the word "principal" as "doing" to "show the way" or "guide".

The significant and well respected research university, an academic researcher and phenomenologist van Manen (1991) propose a more precise definition which states that "the leader must take the initiative and go first, you can trust me because I've tested the ice "(p. 38). Cronin (1980) proposed a simple definition and succinctly when he said that leadership can be defined as "the ability to make things happen that otherwise would not events" (p. 372).

Leadership requires that certain tracks, guides, directs, or orders someone to do something that otherwise would not. It has many kinds of leadership: Situational Leadership, Leadership, Servant-Leadership, Director Centered Leadership, Leadership Command-Control, and many more types. Each type has its own definition and different, if a definition of leadership does not fit all type.
